Merlot 101

What's the difference between Chianti and Merlot?

My girlfriend and I need a red wine to pair with our meal tonight. Normally I'm good when it comes to pairing but I haven't experienced a lot of Chiantis and I know she isn't crazy about Merlot. What are the differences between Merlot and Chianti and are there any better options I could pair with chicken, pasta, and red sauce?

1. Merlot is a red grape used to produce the wine, Chianti is produced in the Chianti region of Italy, The main grape used is a Sangiovese grape, But it is also usually blended with other grapes....
2. I prefer merlot.
3. They're both fairly dry reds; Merlot is from France, Chianti from Italy. Why not try a Portuguese Rose instead?
