Merlot 101

Cooking ribeye steak, which red wine will be good with it? Merlot or Shiraz or Cabernent Sauvignon?

I am cooking a ribeye steak on cast iron pan, deglazing with some red wine and onions....Which red wine would be good for deglazing and couple glasses with the steak? Merlot or Shiraz or Cabernet Sauvignon? Those red wines are what I have with me. Also I have 2 different kind of wine glasses, 1 is "wide bowl" other glass is tall long side....Cooking for my girlfriend tonight and I want her to have a good dinner with good wine....Thanks for the answers!

  1. My favorite is Merlot, but any of those would be good. You use the wide bowl glasses ..... save the tall, thin ones for when you're serving champagne to her:)
  2. thats so sweet! merlot with the wide bowl - definately. have fun!
  3. Since you have all three wines on hand, I presume you know the difference in taste and presumably like all three. It's all a matter of personal taste. I like all three but would probably go with the Cab because it usually has more body and will stand up a little better to the steak. Here's a thought. Consider dressing the steak up a bit with some crumbles of a good blue cheese (Mountain Gorgonzola is great and less expensive than most.) And yes, the wide bowl is the conventional wisdom for serving red wines. The narrower one is more for whites, unless it's so narrow you'd call it a flute, which are for bubbly. BTW--way to go cooking for your lady. That has been very rewarding for me. In fact, I used to write a column called "The Bachelor Cooks."
  4. any of the 3 will be fine. use the wide bowl wine glass for the red to let the wine breath the other glass is more for your white wine n bubbly
